Monitoring Reefs, Pollution, and Mariculture in the Philippines

A collaboration between University of Philippines Diliman (UPD), Marine Science Institute and University of California, Berkeley (UCB) will send a Wave Glider to the Philippines, tasked with three important environmental monitoring projects: monitoring pollution at Boracay island, measuring water quality at Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, and monitoring environmental conditions essential to sustainable mariculture in Bolinao, Pangasinan.

Quake Expectations: We’re Getting Better at Anticipating the Next Big Tremor

The Wall Street Journal recently wrote about how the Wave Glider is helping scientists better predict earthquakes. As researchers work to map out the precise movements of various subduction zones around the world, the Wave Glider collects the data from seismic measuring devices on the seabed and transmits it back to shore, where it can be used it to build models forecasting how the Earth's tectonic plates will actually move. (Full article requires subscription.)

Research Roundup

We’re always excited to see how researchers are using Wave Gliders in new and creative ways. Our latest research roundup includes three great examples of this, as researchers implement a new method of tracking targets using acoustic tags; validate the efficiency of acoustic biotelemetry sensors on Wave Gliders, and measure sea surface height using a GNSS receiver on a Wave Glider.
